You’ve probably heard of Adobe’s generative fill feature in Photoshop, and you might not know this, but you can use this feature for free in your browser—you don’t need Photoshop. I’ll show you how to do this step-by-step.
Getting the Thumbnail Idea
To start, I needed an idea for a project, so I asked ChatGPT for a crazy idea and decided to create something inspired by one of the greatest creators of all time. The chosen idea? A 24-hour treasure hunt challenge within a massive maze. Exciting! The AI-generated thumbnail must meet these four conditions:
1. A maze-like pattern with a vibrant background.
2. A person in the foreground with a surprised expression.
3. Contestants within the maze holding items like flashlights or doing challenges.
4. Cash or gold coins throughout the thumbnail, representing treasures.

Step-by-Step Thumbnail Creation
Let’s dive in. First, head over to Adobe Firefly. This platform offers a variety of free beta features for you to test, including text-to-image generators, 3D image generators, and more. For this, we’ll use the generative fill feature. Typically, you upload an image and modify it by selecting parts and providing prompts, similar to a text-to-image generator.
Starting from Scratch
However, to create a completely new image, I uploaded a blank white image to start. With the generative fill tool, you can simply select a part of your image to modify and describe what you want to generate. For example, I created a lovely post-apocalyptic city with a toxic orange sky, a mountain, and a cute AI robot overlooking the scene. What a sight!
Creating the Maze and Background
For the thumbnail, the first element was a maze-like pattern with a vibrant background. I selected the area for the maze, described a giant maze, and generated it. Adobe provides four options for every prompt; if none fit, you can generate more until you find the right one. Once you find the one you like, press "keep." Next, I moved to the background, selecting a beautiful blue sky to complement the maze.
Adding the Foreground Character
The second element was a person with a surprised expression in the foreground. Adobe’s program, trained on Adobe stock footage, doesn’t generate specific individuals. Instead, I instructed it to create an image of a surprised person. Generating people can be tricky, so adjustments might be necessary, such as generating new eyes or resizing features for better proportions. Bright and contrasting colors help focal points stand out, so I changed the shirt color to bright green for better contrast.
Including Contestants in the Maze
The third element involved adding contestants in the maze doing challenges. Using detailed brushwork, I added a person with a flashlight in a red shirt to stand out. Then, I placed another person on a ladder looking over the maze. Adding challenges like these brings depth to the image.
Enhancing with Treasures and Final Touches
Lastly, I added cash and gold coins throughout the thumbnail. For the centerpiece, I placed a large dollar sign as the main prize. A bonus trick?
